Garmin G6 – 2 buttons and touchscreen
magic
Garmin announces the launch of its new golf gps. Next to be released after the worthy Garmin approach G5 is the Garmin G6 model.
Keeping with the touchscreen controls 2 buttons have been added to quickly change to green view, shot view or digital score card making the Garmin G6 a better and easier to use device.
Packaged in a unit similar in size to the Garmin approach G3 Garmin have managed to make available 25000 courses globally with no set up fee’s or annual subscription in this economical package.
95.6 grams make the new Garmin G6 almost half the weight of the preceding model the Garmin G5 . This is a small and light weight unit that players are not noticing in their pockets or belt clips.
Armed with a USB interface it is 3.7 inches by 2.1 inches by 0.8 of an inch deep and rated at IXP7.
In bright sunlit conditions because of trans-reflective screen technology you can see the 2.2 inch by 1.4 inch screen clearly. The screen has been improved and is easier to view in sunlit conditions than the G5 or G3 screens were.
Some critisism has been made of the graphics being basic in nature and not as good as competing models such as the Callaway Upro but the distances are the key and these can be lined up with the edges of bunkers or boundaries with confidence.
The Garmin G6 has benefited from additions to and new features that came with the Garmin approach G5. Having an integrated rechargeable battery as part of the unit is seen as one of these improvements. The rechargeable battery technology incorporated in this device is enabling three to four rounds to be played with out the need to recharge in between rounds.
Also downloading updates which are free is a resonably fast and easy process unlike some of its competitors such as the Sky Caddie SGX
Acquiring satellites is slower than most other units which is not that big a problem with its large battery life as the Garmin G6 can be turned on earlier than other models when you arrive at the course as you don’t have to worry about it draining your battery. Once it acquires the satellites it dosn’t have any problems with them dropping out and being under tree’s dosn’t cause you to lose them.
New features of the Garmin G6
By including fairway lay up arcs at 100,150 and 200 the touch targeting feature doesn’t need to be used as much. The lay up arcs are a faster reference however you are still able to use touch targeting. By touching the screen the G6 will automatically give you the lay up arcs and a distance reading from there to the green.
The course preview feature allows you to see the course before you play it, enabling you to get a feel for the holes before you play them and have an idea of club selection before arriving at the course.
Improvements to statistics keeping are the number of putts per round and greens and fairways hit in regulation. These features are accessed by one of the two buttons which opens up a scorecard and you record your stats as you play.
Reviewing your stats mid round on the Garmin G6
Reviewing your round as you can be done giving all statistics including average distance hit by each club. This requires inputting distances and clubs hit into the G6 as you are playing to get a data base to work from. If the greens are hit in regulation or the distance travelled and the time taken to play.
Keeping your group of fours card can be done and the device will work out scores for stroke play, skins, stableford scores and matchplay.
Manually moving the pin position on screen can be done using green view to give a more precise actual pin placement and yardage. This is made feasible by tapping on the screen stick which zooms in for a close up view.
User comments have been very positive so far and below is a typical user review:
I have owned many GPS and range finders. I most recently had a Sky Caddie,
Callaway and Garmin G3 . If you are looking for a small GPS, by far this is the
best I have ever had. It has an easy to read screen and fits in your pocket
easily. All of the courses are already on the device and there is no annual fee.
I have played 3 rounds on a single charge and it appears I might be able to get
in another one, but don’t want to take the chance. I can’t imagine someone not
liking this device.
So as you can see the Garmin G6 is an easy to use, mainly touchscreen Golf Gps device with many features that are sure to make this a popular addition to the bag.
